Haikou People's Hospital is a comprehensive Class A tertiary hospital integrating clinical care, medical education, scientific research, preventive medicine, and rehabilitative medicine. Founded in 1901, this century-old institution has traversed the turbulent journey of the 20th century and witnessed the passage of time across Hainan. From its origins as a Sino-French clinic established by the French government, to its expansion into the Sino-French Hospital in 1910, its renaming as Haikou People's Hospital in 1953, and its designation as Class A tertiary hospital by the Ministry of Health in 1997, it has remained rooted in Haikou, safeguarding the health and well-being of the local community. In 2003, it became the Haikou Affiliated Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine; in 2020, it was designated as the Haikou Clinical College of Xiangya School of Medicine; and in 2026, the Haikou Municipal People's Government and Central South University further deepened their cooperation to jointly establish the Haikou Research Institute of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University. In June 2026, the hospital was officially designated as the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan University.
Since comprehensive reforms were launched in September 2025, the hospital has seized momentum by optimizing its disciplinary divisions, restructuring its operational systems, and recruiting and cultivating high-level talents. Through convenience‑enhancing measures that address the public’s needs from both inside and outside, patient care processes have been continuously optimized, and medical services have steadily improved.
This century-old hospital is moving forward with both its unwavering original aspiration and brand-new steps to continue safeguarding the health and well-being of countless families across Hainan.
Century-Old Virtues and A Rich Legacy of Medical Innovation
Since its founding, Haikou People's Hospital has taken on the safeguarding of public health as its mission, constantly striving for excellence and innovation in medical technology. The hospital has successfully performed numerous challenging surgical procedures, including robotic‑assisted laparoscopic surgery, navigation‑guided minimally invasive hip‑preserving surgery, and single‑port robotic radical prostatectomy. The hospital’s range of minimally invasive surgeries continues to expand, and its capacity to treat complex and critical illnesses ranks among the highest in the province. The hospital has successively achieved accreditation as a National Stroke Screening and Prevention Base, National Advanced Stroke Center, National Level‑1 Epilepsy Center, National Chest Pain Center, National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, the Haikou Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, the Haikou Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, a National Postdoctoral Workstation, and an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Tropical Medicine. The hospital’s clinical laboratory has received CNAS ISO15189 accreditation. The hospital has also been designated as a Provincial Clinical Medical Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Rehabilitation Medicine, the Haikou Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center and the Meilan District Critical Maternal Care Center.
The hospital is equipped with world-class facilities, including the DaVinci robotic surgical system, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy system, dual C-arm digital flat-panel angiography system, PET-CT, dual-source CT, 256-slice CT, 3.0T MRI system, and electron linear accelerator, providing a solid foundation for the precise diagnosis and treatment of complex and intractable illnesses.
The hospital adheres to a “talent-driven development” strategy, continuously intensifying efforts to recruit high-level talent and cultivate key personnel. It currently employs 3,013 staff members, with healthcare professionals accounting for 87.49% of its workforce. This includes 644 staff with senior-level professional titles and 1,792 staff with intermediate-level professional titles. The hospital boasts 7 experts who receive special government allowances from the State Council, 16 Hainan Provincial Outstanding Experts, 2 Hainan Provincial Leading Talents, and 82 Hainan Provincial Top-tier Talents.

Integrating Medical Care, Education, and Research to Cultivate Talent and Strengthen Foundations
In 2003, the hospital became a master’s and doctoral degree training center for Central South University. Currently, the hospital has 14 doctoral student advisors and 39 master’s degree student advisors. Since 2007, it has participated in the national unified postgraduate enrollment program, beginning enrollment of doctoral students in 2013. To date, 406 master’s degree and 41 doctoral degree candidates have successfully graduated, filling multiple gaps in Hainan’s medical education. The hospital houses 20 teaching and research departments and 14 nationally-accredited standardized residency training programs. The hospital serves as a National Standardized Residency Training Base, a National Clinical Training Base for General Practice, a Laparoscopic Surgery Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctors’ Association, and a Humanistic Medicine Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctors’ Association. By maintaining synergy between medical practice and education and strengthening the development of its educational system—with a focus on three core areas: residency training, clinical teaching, and continuing education—the hospital has repeatedly won national graduate scholarships and honors in provincial clinical skills competitions. As a result, the competence of its staff and the teaching capabilities of its faculty continue to improve. In June 2026, the hospital officially became the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan University, marking a new phase in the development of medical higher education in Hainan and healthcare in Haikou characterized by local university collaboration and the integration of medical practice and education. By leveraging their complementary strengths for mutual empowerment, both parties are building a “triad of excellence” in high-level medical talent cultivation, medical technology translational clinical research, and regional healthcare services.
Public Welfare as Our Foundation, Compassion for the People
The hospital has consistently upheld its focus on public welfare as a public hospital, prioritizing public service, allocation of resources to grassroots levels, and social responsibility. As the leading institution for Haikou’s integrated urban medical consortium, it coordinates care across four municipal district hospitals, township health centers, and community health service centers (and stations) across the region. By focusing on key initiatives such as allocation of resources to grassroots levels, support for primary care facilities, specialty development, and the integration of medical and preventive care, the hospital has established a scientific healthcare system characterized by “primary care at the grassroots level, bi-directional referrals, separate treatment pathways for acute and chronic conditions, and coordinated care across all levels.” By supporting infrastructure development at branch hospitals, dispatching experts to provide medical and technical assistance, and establishing specialized joint wards through a “department-to-hospital” partnership model, the hospital has effectively strengthened the foundation of the local primary healthcare service network.
As a model institution for voluntary blood donation, the hospital’s staff has made a cumulative total of 5,886 blood donations, amounting to 1.536 million milliliters. Both the number of donors and the total volume donated rank first among public hospitals in the province, and the hospital has twice been awarded the “National Voluntary Blood Donation Promotion Award.” The hospital has also successfully provided medical support services for various large-scale conferences and events, fully demonstrating its sense of responsibility as a public hospital.
Open Collaboration, Connecting with the World
The hospital continues to deepen cooperation with renowned domestic institutions such as Hainan University, Central South University, and Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital, expanding into cutting-edge fields such as brain-computer interfaces and smart hospitals. Leveraging the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, it has expanded international research and clinical collaboration. It was the first hospital in the province to establish an international medical clinic, led by a management team headed by American experts. It has provided high-quality medical services to patients from over 70 countries, and the number of international patients treated at the hospital consistently ranks among the highest in the province. The hospital spearheaded the revision of the *Guidelines for the Establishment and Management of International Medical Clinics in Hainan (2026 Revised Edition)*, providing a framework for the standardized development of international medical services across the province, continuously enhancing the hospital’s influence in the medical sector of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
Carrying Forward Our Legacy, Striving for New Heights
The hospital fully implements a system of accountability by the hospital president under the leadership of the Party Committee, using Party branch development as a lever by which to promote deep integration of Party construction within medical care, teaching, and research. Anchored in the 2030 development goals, the hospital will focus on high standard development of the core leading zone of the Hainan Free Trade Port and “Six Cities”. The hospital is fully committed to creating a cluster of gold-standard clinical disciplines, with a focus on developing seven major disease centers for vascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, oral, orthopedic, urological, and hematological diseases.
Our original aspirations remain unchanged, and our journey ahead is as bright as a rainbow. Haikou People’s Hospital will always adhere to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as our guiding principle, fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and all subsequent plenary sessions of the 20th Central Committee, uphold the hospital motto of “Integrity, Unity, Dedication, and Excellence,” and remain committed to our mission of “Serving the People and Promoting Health for Every Family.” With determination to reach new heights and compassionate hearts, we will continue to write a glorious new chapter on the path of safeguarding the health of the people.
